24' pontoon and I got careless on monday! All input appreciated. After three years and I don't know how many trips, I let a tow rope get entangled in my prop. Motor fine, steering locked. I can't get back out to work on it for a couple of days....any help? It's 94/95 Starcraft, 94/95 Nissan 70hp.

Re: Steering Locked

Assuming the tow rope was secured to the boat, the engine was probably subjected to a severe turning motion which likely bent the steering rod.

Let us know what you find.

Re: Steering Locked

Thx. Work is keeping me from playing. Might not make it until Saturday now. If I have to replace the steering, do you have any recomendations?

Re: Steering Locked

No. As in your other thread, the steering is unique to the motor. There may be some generic brands out there but I'm not aware of any. Others will soon chime in if there are some.

I see all the teleflex rotary, nfb, etc whole system in a box and I'm just not sure which I should get should it come to having to change the cable. etc. Thanks for helping me on this.

Re: Steering Locked

Before you sink all that money in it try lubing the steering, then use a wood block and hammer/mall on the end of the steering rod to see if you can jar it loose, have someone work the steering while you're doing that......you never know if it's a simple or easy fix till you try the simple first. Good luck.

Re: Steering Locked

Thx everybody. Your help has saved me countless hours. It's the rod that is bent. I used marine grease and lubed everything. Starightened the rod and now have 1/2 turning ability, but I still must have a slight bend in the rod. I guess I need to get it off completely either straighten better or buy new.
