I am replacing my steering cables this weekend on my outboard and I have read on here that I need to apply mercs special lube 101 to my stainless steering rod. I do not have access to the 101. Will super tech lower gear oil work or is there anything at walmart, lowes or advance auto that will work? They have a lithium grease at lowes but it doesnt say it is marine grade. What can be used to grease the helm that I can get locally over the weekend as well?

You use the thick marine grease that comes in a tube on the steering rod? Im clueless on what to use but I figured you would want something not as thick

If you want it to stay in the loose 0-ring seal that's factory, you need a grease. You can get a lube-nut for it that comes with a special fairly light oil and that might be better.

Just be careful you don't get so much grease on it that it gets into the actual cable. Then you'll experience stiff.

hope it helps

If yer talking V6 over 50MPH boat, you're in dangerous territory with half baked steering, as in bat turn at WOT. Hitting the water ain't so bad, it's going through the gunwale first that hurts.

I repeat, don't mess with steering on a high perf boat unless you know what you are doing, or follow the advice of someone who does.

hope it helps

Re: steering lube at walmart???

I was only taking it out to test the boat. I just wanted to know if it was even possible to steer. My boat stalls and cuts out whenever I give it throttle. I thought I had it fixed but had no luck yesterday. I will make a new post for that question. Thanks for the response
