See signature for type of boat. I have hydraulic steering on the boat. This afternoon it seemed like the steering was slipping when the motor was trimmed all the way down. When I got home I noticed a few drops of oil around the O ring where the shaft comes out next to the motor. There is an oil fill right behind the steering wheel. I assume to get things sterring correctly I need to add oil at the steering wheel fill, but not exactly sure what kind to add. Just plain old hydraulic oil? Haven't had a chance to see if it is just the O ring leaking or the part that holds in in place needs another turn. :(

Re: Steering Oil

You must find out the manufacturer of your steering unit and they will advise you on the type of fluid to use. You could damage the system, usually seals, using the wrong fluid...same as differing transmission fluids and power steering fluids in your auto.
