Steering play

Just bought a new Rinker 232 Mercruiser 5.0 MPI/B3. This is my 6th boat, and this one (like most of the others) has some play in the steering wheel. I think i know what the answer is going to be but I'll ask anyhow. Is this common? I can move the wheel about for total of 1-1.5 inch of before any kind of resistance is felt, or any kind of steering actuation happens. Is there any way to tighten this up? All steering connections are tight and fluid is at the proper level.

I ask this time because since this one is a B3 (all previous were single prop drives) It's not easy to keep it going in a perfectly strait line at speed. I'll straiten up the boat, then after the boat goes for a while, the thrust from the props gradually pushes the drive in the direction where there is the most play, and the boat slightly changes course. Then I have to correct to keep the boat strait. On a long strait this happens over and over. With the Alpha or B1, the torque from the prop preloaded the drive just enough that the drive didn't hunt from side to side.

Any help appreciated.

Re: Steering play

Scottmech: A few weeks ago some of us discussed this same issue. Check this thread

http://www.iboats.com/cgi-bin/ubb/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=1;t=004769

I have had issues with play in the outdrive, that may be similar to your problem. If you move the outdrive side-to-side and there is play in the shaft (attachment to top and bottom) the above thread may help. If not let us know where the problem is isolated.

Re: Steering play

Thanks for the info. Take a look at those areas. And let you know what I find.
