Steering problem

I have a '88 Arrowglass 18ft w/ a 4 cyl 165 HP AlphaOne Mercruiser. My steering pulls sharply to the left when the boat is moving. If I don't keep two hands on the wheel, the boat will flip. Is there some sort of steering dampener or device I can buy that will keep my steering wheel from pulling so much?

-Tired of holding the wheel with both hands

Re: Steering problem

This boat has power steering or not?
The 'pull' come from the torque of the engine/prop......
There is a sacrificial anode on the out drive that should have a 'fin' on it.....
Turning the rear of that fin in the direction of the pull will help allieviate it some.......
At higher speeds you will always have some pull on a single prop set up....
If you have power steering, then something is not right.....
Hope this helps......
Welcome to iboats, btw........:)

Re: Steering problem

I have the same problem on my steering not so dramatic. The only problem with my fin on the lower unit is that it is set so that when I anchor the allen from above it always faces dead in the middle. Is there another you can purchase or is this an alignment issue of some sort?

Re: Steering problem

Teleflex makes a replacement rack-type steering cable and head kit that reduces torque steer.Order by cable length.

You wanna check that the hull isn't all hooked one way. I forget the terminology. How did this problem start? All of the sudden, or getting gradually worse? Or did someone just sell you a banana shaped boat?

I don't believe I have power steering, it's some sort of pull from the torque of the engine. I will try turning the fin on the engine slightly and see if that helps....
