I have a mid 90's bass boat with a dual rack, dual cable setup on a Merc 150 outboard. The owner has broken the helm trying to force it to turn.(bad cables)

Anyone converted this type of steering to a dual cable rotary?
Just wondering being i can not find the same setup that is on the boat now.
I looked at all the complete steering systems on the Iboats site and got kinda confused as to what would work.
Any help is appreciated!:D

Re: Steering Question

Got it figured out..
The old steering was made by Detmar and is NLA

It is getting a Teleflex NFB system going back in...:D

Re: Steering Question

You might want to test drive a similar rig with NFB. If you have never experienced the feeling of NFB you really should BEFORE you make an investment in it.

You will hear 1/2 love it and 1/2 hate it. I installed the Teleflexmarine NFB last season and took it back off 2 weeks later in favor of the OEM Teleflex that my rig came with.

If you are flying straight shots between point A and point B it might be OK. But if you do any general fishing or cruising around I found the stiffness is really annoying.

It was like going from power steering to all of a sudden no power steering
With NFB there is no more leisurely cruising around and with a finger just spinning the wheel in the direction you want the boat to go.

Like I said, some will come back and say how much they love it . . . test drive it first if you have never experienced it. It turns your boat's steering into like you are driving a Go Cart.

I'm going to list the kit I bought on Craigslist as we get closer to boating season:

P.S. almost moved to Charlotte, NC several years ago! Been there 4-5 times checking it out. Nice area to live :)

Re: Steering Question

Thanks for the tip Expedia!

The boat it is going on suffered from way too much feedback from the steering at higher speeds. The guy said it was white knuckle grip to hold it straight.
The cav plate is broken to the point where the steering tab will not attach.
He also has a foil on it that i told him could be the problem as far as torque steer.
He decided on the NFB and went ahead and ordered it...
He had been driving it for 2 years with bad cables. It was really hard to turn so i hope he is happy with the new system.
If not i will change it out for him...
