Steering Replacement

I am about to overhaul the steering on my Stratos 289 FS with Johnson 200GT. I bought the teleflex dual cable no feedback kit. My question is when i am removing the old cables, What is the best way? Should I try to pull them from motor to console or console to motor. Also was thinking I might be able to use the old cables to pull the new ones in as I pull the old cables out. I had to replace a shift cable a few years back and I remember it was pain getting the new cable fed. (Working through wires cables hoses ect. all in an area you can't reach or see under the rear deck) Anyone have any suggestion on how the best way to pull old cables out and get the new ones in? Also wondeirng about the tiller tube. Will I have to support the motor to pull that cable out? Any experience or guidance would be appreciated. Thanks!

I've done one outboard cable and one I/O cable. In the outboard, I didn't have to do anything with the motor itself (boat was a '72). I disconnected from the motor, and disconnected from the helm. The cable ran down the starboard gunwale in a series of hooks that I could access all the way down. Basically, that one was EASY.

On the I/O, i did the same type of thing - unhooked from the sterndrive, and unhooked from the helm. The cable on this one ran through a foam channel under the starboard gunwale. I tied a piece of rope to the end of the cable and pulled it toward the helm (that seemed easiest). when i brought it through, I just untied the rope and left it as a "rat line" when I went to pull the new cable on. This boat is old too (1972), I think I ended up pulling both ways. When I pulled the old cable out, I pulled toward the helm. When I put the new one in, I pulled from the helm to the stern.
