I will need to replace my steering system very soon and need some questions to be answered. I have a ’78 Evinrude 35 Hp.

1. I have a rack system right now, but I heard rotary systems are better. Could I replace my rack with a rotary?

2. How do I determine how long of a cable do I need?

3. How easy is it to replace the system? Could I do it myself (I have some mechanic background) or should it be done by a professional?

I have called my local outboard repair shop and was told that it will cost me from $300 - $400 for a new system and installation...ouch!

Re: Steering system replacement

you can use the new rotary system fits the same holes, as your rack, very simple to install. measure from center of helm to the side , from helm to stern, from side of stern to center of motor. add them up round up to nearest foot. it will also use your motor connection.
