Steering Tight, need advice - Teleflex repair/replace

Hi All,

I have a 1993 Sunbird with a Teleflex steering system. I thought the tightness was from the tube/grease steering rack on the motor, so I had that all cleaned out and re-greased. This did not solve the problem so I am guessing it is the steering controlls at the helm.

Any advice/recommendations woud be great. I am very new at this type of issue.

disconnect the steering link arm at the motor, turn motor, and turn wheel are either stiff. the cables do not like sharp bends, creating tension.

TashDaddy....thanks for your advice..

Quick question though, as I am a newbe on this issue. I see a large (about 1") nut on the end of the cable where it connects to the motor. I also read a post about the linkage arm (or something like that). I am guessing I need to disconnect the motor to see if its the steering tube or the helm, right?

If I disconnect the nut, will this release the cable and allow me to test which side the issue is?

I had this at a mechanic, he disconnected the motor and cleaned/greased the tube. He said it was still tight but that it should work itself out as there was no rust/issues with this section. I took the boat out yesterday and ran it for about 1.5 hours...it did not work itself out however.

well if he cleaned the tilt tube, you should have no problem getting it out. other than space restrictions. as i said, you can disconnect either the link rod at the motor, or at the end of the cable shaft. if motor turn easy, and wheel is stiff. persue the cable further.

what motor do you have?

I have been reading some other posts as well. It looks like there are two types of cables being used. I think mine might be the older type, being a 1993, which I see there is a helm for this configuration.

I need to get under there and look this over to make sure I have it all sorted out.

Is this an easy component to replace? Standard tools? I am guessing at this point that its just the helm, that the cable and the tubes are fine becuase they have been serviced.
