I have a 85 HP merc with jet pump on a 16' starcraft, recently purchased. When I got the boat the steering was so stiff I could'nt steer it. I freed it up and now when under way the steering wheel wants to go hard left ( or is it right). If I let go of steering wheel it would be a dangerous situation I'm sure. Is there any way to adjust for this ? Motor is a 73 4 cyl. Thanks

Re: Steering/torque

Adjust the trim tab a little at a time in the direction of the pull until the pull goes away. It is probably pulling to starboard so move the back of the trim tab to starboard.

Re: Steering/torque

A jet drive has no anoide trim fin.
There may be a tension adjustment nut somewhere on the motor ussually on the leg, close to the transom clamps.
also some steering wheels have a tension knob on the bottom of the the steering wheel housing.

Re: Steering/torque

No adjustment on motor or steering wheel. Guess I have to live with it.
