I have a 15 foot boat with a 70hp johnson, it turns sharper to right and would like to know if there is
an adjustment to turn as far to left. The boat is a 1982 deep V and has a steering system like the Tefelex Backmount The Rack Steering System Package
sold on this site. I have tried a few things with no luck. Is the cable to short? The steering system maybe original.

When you turn the wheel as far as it will go in either direction, is the engine symmetrical, i.e. does the engine itself turn equally far to both sides?

If it does, the asymmetrical turning could be a consequence of the propeller torque, from it spinning in one direction.

If the engine does not turn equally far to both sides, you could try to unhook the steering cable from it and manually turn the engine from side to side. If this goes well, you would then need to realign the steering cable setup before rehooking it to the engine.

If the pinion wasn't centeres on the rack when the cable was connected to the motor with the motor straight you would get that result.

If I unhook the nut at the motor I can move the engine more so in fact it would turn more to the left. With the steering cable hooked up it has about
one inch more travel avaiable on the shaft going
through engine.

If I make an adjustment does this mean I will not be able to turn as sharp to right?

I do not see any adjustment at the motor and the rack is bolted to pinion(steering wheel) so I'm
not sure where to make the adjustments.

I did have it all apart last weekend to lube it up

There should be a bolt in the end of the steering shaft where it goes thru the rack. Remove that bolt, pull the wheel up a little and make sure it is in the middle of the rack. That would insure that you have the same rack travel in both directions.
