If this is the wrong section, I'm sorry!

Is there such a thing as rebuilding or tightening up a steering gear box? The steering wheel is awful loose. The actual wheel isn't loose but the steering gear box is.

I can move the wheel a couple inches each direction before the cable starts to move the motor. Is this something I can pull off, pull apart and tighten up? Maybe re-grease it or do I just buy a new one?

This is on a 1970 Mirrorcraft Ski-N-Troll.

Thanks!

What kind of steering? Rotary or Rack? Take a pic under the dash so we can see

Sorry, I missed that this was replied to. After Googling I believe it's a rotary style steering box. I did take some pictures.

You have a serious problem!!! Your steering may fail !!! With that kind of system a gear type plate drives the flex cable to move the motor. If you remove the short piece of tube that covers the flex cable under the dash and see if the cable moves as you turn the steering wheel. If it doesn't then you have a problem with gear drive in the assembly. If it does move with the wheel then it is a problem in your connection to the motor. Good Luck!

P.S. The springy cable thing you see on the upper side of the steering unit should have a plastic sleeve on it and the springy cable packed with a good grease to cut down on the wear on the driving gear plate. Please tell us what you find on this problem.
