I replaced the steering cable from wheel to stern today...3.8L V6 OMC stringer with Tru-Course steering. It works great, but I think the outdrive turns in the opposite direction. When I turn the wheel to Starboard (right), the stern is also pointing in that direction (in other words, the prop is to the port side). Am I crazy or is this right?
Shouldn't the prop swing over to the same direction that you are turning the wheel? Beats me...I put everything back like it goes, there is no other way to do it.
Thanks for any advice.
Cal

Sounds backwards to me flip it over if its a rack, feed it thru the other hole if its a rotory.

It's rotary...by feeding it through the other whole, you mean taking the drum assembly off the steering wheel and flipping it over, then sliding it back on?

When I replaced this I also replaced the steering wheel, and shaft, etc....and I just noticed that the hole in the shaft (where the drum retaining screw goes thru) to hold the cable drum housing on, is closest to the steering wheel on this shaft and on the old one it is at the end of the shaft. Meaning I would have the cable housing (drum) turned around backwards on this new one as compared to the old one. Am I right? Would this cause it to turn the stern in the wrong direction? How could I fix that, without putting the older shaft back on, which is keyed, rather than splined. My new steering wheel is splined.

mcpo,

You can take the retaining clip off of the drum and turn the wheel until it winds out the cable. Then just thread it back in the drum (by turning the wheel in the opposite direction) in the opposite hole. Reinstall the retainer clip.

Ok, think I understand. Let me ask this first....by retaining clip, do you mean the little wire thing I call a cable guard that lays across the drum to keep the wire in? And turn the wheel until all the wire comes out of the housing then thread it back in? This is a two wire system.
