Hey all,

I’ve got a 2002 Starcraft bowrider with a 4.3L MerCruiser and the stock steering I think? (back mount rack setup, pics attached). I've noticed since getting the boat last year that the steering wheel has about 1–2 inches of free play before it actually starts to engage the drive or "hits the load" if you want to call it that. Once it does, steering feels tight and responsive with no binding or issues under load. I've attached video as well.

The slop seems completely isolated at the wheel—like there’s a dead zone before anything happens. I'm thinking the helm unit gears are worn out and starting to develop internal play. Just wondering if anyone's dealt with this before?

Appreciate any advice. Thanks in advance.

I had the same issue a couple of years back. Had a new helm and cable in my shopping cart.

Went out to double check my measurements before I pushed the button. Found the nut where the cable attached to the helm was maybe a quarter to half a turn loose.

Problem solved
