Hey guys, I'm trying to install a Raymarine Sport Pilot, and step one is of course to remove the wheel. Boat has Tele-flex rack and pinion cable steering. Removed the nut just fine, and now the wheel wont pop off. I yanked and yanked, tapped the nut with a hammer, PB Blaster. My last effort involved setting my feet back up against the dash and tugging...well that didn't work so well as you can see, I destroyed my destroyer wheel.

...am I missing something? Will a puller be safe? How much force can I/do I have to put on this?

while you are pulling up on wheel have someone with hammer and block of wood hit on the nut stud. with a few taps it sould come loose.

Ayuh,.... With strong pressure against the wheel,... slightly less than it took to Destroy yer Destroyer wheel,....

'n with the big nut screwed on Just flush with the end of the shaft,....

A Single Swat with a BFHammer will break it free,...

It's a tapered, keyed shaft...

Ended up having to get a two jaw puller on it. Even then it didn't come easy. Also was able to put the wheel back together without incident. Thanks for the advice guys! I just wanted to be sure there was nothing else holding the wheel on apart from 30 years of corrosion. I think what made it worse was that the wheel has a square taper and the shaft is round. So filling in the gaps was this odd, very compressed "corrosion powder" holding it all together. Took a while just to clean that junk off. Never seen anything like it.

Instead of a puller, what worked for me was standard shims, like the kind you use for installing a door. After loosening the center wheel nut, I rapped a couple of shims between the back of the wheel and the old Teleflex bezel. It slowly forced the wheel right off.
