my ol boat has a R&P steering too. on the back of the rack is a bolt that apears to thread into the pinon shaft with a big spring under it. the spring just seats on a boss on the rack. tightening that bolt tightens the friction on the steering wheel thus makein it looser or tighter depending on what you like.....have no idea if ya have that feature, but if ya do, the steering tension is adjustable. i believe my R&P is a detmar 500......i've never seen another one and believe it's obsolete.........guess ya could look at it this way. to loose would be better than to tight........good luck...........
