I have a 70's Venture bass boat with a 76 Johnson 70hp that I am putting a new console in. Since I am moving the console forward I need longer steering cables. The links below are ones that I am looking at on eBay but I am not sure if they will work or not. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks, Josh

Re: Steering

Any reason not to measure out what you need and look at a NFB system from Teleflex? Whole new gig under $150 or so.

Re: Steering

You've got three different types there.

One is a rotary helm that doesn't say if it's no feedback or not (NFB) usually the one's that are not are used with outdrives not outboards. That being said I hate NFB and mine isn't one.

The second is dual cable for a high speed boat, over 60mph. It will work, but you'll need some more parts and you don't need a dual cable.

The third is a rack in pinion. It's nice but you have to make sure you can fit it under your dash/ console.

You really need to measure though so you know which if any have the right cable length. Teleflex has a diagram that shows you how to measure it right, go to their web site for that.

Don't forget to check out the iboats store for probably the best prices on new parts helm and cables. You might be better off.

Re: Steering

If I were buying one of the 3 it would be the first one, you don't need a dual cable and racks blow, they are notchy and wear out fairly quickly, the rotary is much smoother, get the first one.

Just make sure it is the right size, measure from the center of the steering wheel to the gunnel, from there to the back of the boat and from there to the center of the engine, add all those up and you have the length you need.

Re: Steering

I am tight as a drum myself BUT, this is the most important system on the boat next to the engine and not a place to save pennies, that one will probably work for awhile but it looks pretty used, I had a rack and it seperated and slipped which is way scary at speed, keep inmind if the bids go up you can get a brand new one 158 here at iboats and it will probably last twice as long.

Re: Steering

I have looked at some new ones to. A lot of people on eBay want way to much for a used system and I may end up with a new one anyway. I am just trying to get an idea of which ones will and will not work. I really only take my boat out about 10 times a year and that number will probably increase after my daughter was born in December. I am a believer of doing things the right way unfortunately I can't afford to do so. Thanks for the input Go USC!!!!

Re: Steering

I was with you till you threw in that last line, USC, REALLY?

Just kidding, always a good game and one I look forward to every year did you see where we got the #1 QB, I though that was pretty cool myself, I can get from my driveway to campus in 42 minutes so I kinda have to be IRISH since it is right there.

You can get a used rack and it will work but that last one you put up looked pretty shady and I have had a rack fail on me so I am not real keen on them, pretty scary running 30mph and go to turn and just hear click click click but then again it was probly original and was 20 years old so they are fine.

There really isn't a system that you can't get to work on your boat, the biggest thing is get fairly close on your steering cable.

Re: Steering

I bet game day is pretty fun that close to campus. I actually found a brand new Teleflex rack steering on eBay for $31. I am not sure how no one else noticed it since there were a few others that I was looking at that went for way more that were used. The cable is a little longer than I wanted but it will work. Thanks for the IRISH man I appreciate it.
