i have a 60hp 1984 johnson. The tube that the steering cable bar goes thru appears to have a slight squash on it which gives it a sticky spot.I have up to now replaced the steering box ,cleaned/lubed the cable, but i am having trouble removing the tube from the outboard. Does it slide out? i have managed to get it slid as far as the edge of the thread. Is that bar also tha pivot for the engine raise?.

Re: steering

yes if you remove the tube you will need to support the motor with an engine hoist.
-
its probably jammed due to weight of motor.
-
if it gives way without some type of support, it could seriously injure someone & cause damage to motor and boat.

Re: steering

thanks. I have now removed the tube, after bashing merry hell out of it, it was eventually realized that mine screws out. Using the advise i strapped up the engine to an overhead garage joist and have now put in a temp bar to act as a pivot. Glad to say effort not in vane as looking down the tube it is very rough and gougy, new one now me thinks.
