Re: Step By Step Impeller Change

OK changed right unit no problems(twins) left unit shift rod bent and pushed in. straightened and pulled up with pliers. Used fishing line threaded through hole to line up and installed. Now the problem is unit wont shift in gear now. Any solution other than a tear down

Re: Step By Step Impeller Change

I just did my 50hp and it was simple, all thanks to this thread (1983 Chrysler). For the record, there's only the 4 bolts plus a cotter pin. Once
you loosen and remove the 4 bolts holding the lower unit on, put the motor
in "Forward" and the linkage should drop just enough for you to see and reach
the cotter pin...remove it and then put the motor back in neutral. You should
then be able to either push the lower unit the rest of the way off, or in my
case, use a rubber mallet and gently tap it off. I got lucky and was able to
rest my motor on some 'just the right height' boxes, etc. but it would be a
lot easier to have someone help you.

Don't forget the "turn the flywheel" step when you're replacing it and make
sure your linkage is lined up. And as a huge side-note, once you remove the
driveshaft to access the water pump, be careful where you set the lower unit. It can AND WILL tip over resulting in about 3-5 ounces of lower unit fluid leaking all over said owner's garage floor (since he didn't notice it until
it was too late:))

Thanks so much for the thread, you 'da man!
