I'm a little rusty on my immigration laws...

Say on my trip from Mackinac City, MI to Sault Saint Marie (MI), Canada was in site for a long while. Should I want (or need to) set foot on Canadian soil, do I have to go through a "port of entry" or something to avoid having black helicopters with little maple leafs from showing up or is it not that big of a deal? :D

I mean I might want to stop in Sault Saint Marie (I spell it out because the abbreviated versions annoy me lol), ON for lunch or poke a hole in the hull and have to beach the vessel in the Canadian side of the Detour Passage. I do have a valid passport and all but don't want to be interrogated and thought to be hauling drugs or something.

Thanks guys.

Are you travelling by water?...this time of year?...on the great lakes? or will this be in the summer?
Simply contact your local U.S coast guard and then will tell you where the nearest Canadian customs point is and which harbour/town, etc it is in. When you get across 'the line' simply go there and declare your intentions, etc....very simple stuff. :)
For I.D you don't necessarily need a passport but it helps. Be friendly and honest and forthright and you should get the same in return.
Word of warning....NO firearms, unless you have already applied for a special permit pertaining to a hunting permit, etc, etc. They may very likely check you for this infraction and they will confiscate and keep your weapons if they do. This is the no. 1 infraction that U.S visitors to Canada make and they pay with the loss of the guns.
It will go very well, just a do a little checking and enquiring before you go and you will have no problems.
All Good
BP (a Canadian eh):D;)

You can simply call "1-888-226-7277 ONLY upon arrival in Canada", they will either give you clearance to proceed or instruct you where to go, or to wait where you are until they arrive for inspection. I also believe that you are required to have a VHF radio. I also believe that as long as you are adhering to the rules and regs of your place of origin regarding safety equipment then you are fine (temporarily) in Canadian waters.

Ayuh,....

You can boat into Canadian waters,...
But,...
You can Not anchor, without contacting Customs....
You can Not step foot onto Canadian soil, nor river/ lake bottom, without contacting Customs...
You can Not be Fishing in Canadian waters, unless you have a Canadian Licence...
If you're caught Fishing Without a licence,... All of your Gear,+ Vessel are subject to Confiscation...

Many of the Laws are Very Difference once you cross that Line that you can't see....
Read up on them Before you go,...
Canada doesn't give 2nd Chances,+ Confiscation is their Favorite enforcement tool...

That's only what they want you to think. Look closer, they are made of cardboard. The real ones are preparing to fire!

I'm hoping that it's as common sense as all that if I ever have to step foot in U.S. whilst boating on common waters :- ) That sure would be nice in summer. Getting ready to leave now for a little trip, but not so far as that.
