Stereo for the boat?

My wife got me a stereo for the boat. Very nice of her since I am always my myself (bummer) and the entertainment would be real nice. However, the unit, an expensive Pioneer, states that it can't be mounted where water might drip down it. The only place I could find where it would fit is on the center console benieth the ingnition switch, which is also under the binacle, and part under the steering wheel base. Basically there is no way to keep the thing totally dry in my little boat. Is my only option to get a little boom box type radio that will plug into the cig lighter?

How about building a small water-proof enclosure for it, and using one of those plastic face-covers that west marine sells? You could just build a square box out of 3/8" ply, use epoxy to waterproof it, and attach that to the back of whatever surface you're going to mount the radio through. That with the plastic face cover should keep it nice and dry.

Just a thought.

Steve, I'm getting exhausted just reading that, much less actually ding all that.....man that's too much like work for me.....I think I'll wait until I have more substantial boat to put that much effort into. My little john boat does not warrant the work because I don't think I'll keep it much longer. Been wanting a little bit bigger boat anyhow.

i used this for my radio

http://www.westmarine.com/webapp/wc...0001&classNum=562&subdeptNum=11156&storeNum=3

i really just used it for a mount, since i put the whole thing inside my electronics box under the hardtop. but it works well, and seals tight.

if the expensive pioneer isn't a marine radio, i'd exchange it for one that is. i'd also suggest buying a midgrade radio and spending more money on the speakers. i installed two small 5" speakers from poly planar, and they sound awesome. good luck-

Mine is mounted in the cabin, in a box, never sees a drop of water, and the things still only last about 2 years. Its the salt in the air, not dripping water that kills them. So I got in the habit of buying replacements on E-Bay and never paying more than $25 for them. When they begin to rust away I toss them and go shopping again. Its not like I was looking for concert quailty sound on the boat.

Soulwinner,

Fishing sposed to be relaxing to get away from the sight and sounds of everyday life! To me a jitterbug making nice water gulping sounds, a frog croaking on a log, or a fish thrashing at boatside yields some of the best music a fisherman can ask for.

If you want to hear some music, I'd take that expensive stereo back and buy a $10 Harmonica. Then take the rest of the money and you buy some nice rods, reels, and tackle.

BTW,
Your wife will be so impressed your able to play Row Row Row your boat after you find yourself up the creek without a paddle.

Kevin
