Stereo mount - need help

I took out the old stereo unit and am putting in a new one (single DIN size). There is about a 3" by 8" hole in the plywood where the previous stereo was removed (the plywood is 1" thick).

I'm not sure if this is the best way to go about this, but I plan on cutting out a piece of wood 3x8" to fill this hole, and within that piece have another 2x7" slot cut out for the standard DIN size. This should then fit inside the 3x8" hole using wood glue and filler around the edges, then sand down. After that I plan on using the standard DIN sleeve that came with the head unit. For vertical support, perhaps I would run another piece of plywood along the bottom of the opening in the hole using L braces?

I have absolutely no clue if this is the right way to go about it, but I've been unable to find any resources about how to go about this. Perhaps there is already a solution out there for this? I could use one of the external kits, but then I'm left with a huge hole in the dash.

Any thoughts or suggestions?

Any marine outlet has an in-dash enclosure with a pivoting door that covers the unit to protect it from moisture. Stop at any boat dealer and look at most any boat. If it has a radio it will be mounted in one of these enclosures that would very likely fit the hole you currently have.

Wow that looks like just what I need... the hole I need to fill is 8x3" (this is a 1989 Sea Ray BR 210 by the way)....

The problem with most enclosures is that even if they fit perfectly in the existing 8x3" hole, how do I mount it in there!

Boss,

Would you do me a huge favor and measure the width from screw hole to screw hole for that item, as well as the height? I want to see if these screw holes will align with the existing ones I have. Also, does the DIN sleeve that comes with the head unit just mount right in there?

Thanks

Not 100% sure of the question but it slips into a 3"x8" hole & "lips" cover another 3/4" :)
I was very impressed for 9 bucks
