Newer to iboats and I like seeing all the work people are doing to their boats, new and old. Thought I would share last year's stereo upgrade that grew a bit out of control as it progressed.

We have a 2002 Cobalt 226 with a Samson Tower. We spend most of our time cruising and floating. She is fast and rides very smooth in most waters.

I wanted to add an amp and a couple tower speakers. At the same time, I wanted to change out the speakers in the boat, retain the stock remote and add a subwoofer.

I started by buy Polk DB-651 speakers off of amazon. They were on sale for $35 per pair so I bought 3 pairs to upgrade the speakers in the boat. I also bought a pair of tower pods, each with 2 Polk DB-651 speakers.

Here is what we started with.

I then decided where I wanted to mountthe electronics and made a template out of cardboard and then cut the mounting boards out of starboard.

Then it was time to figure placement for all the electronics. I cut out templates from cardboard and tried different placements to see what worked best. I started with a Class a/b amp, but that turned out to take up to much space. I ended up going with all Class D amps to save space and power.

I started by creating a crude wiring diagram for everything to make sure I had the proper power and cabling. I wanted to be able to control each amp seperately so I could turn off the tower, or turn off the boat speakers, etc. I also decided to add cooling fans to move some air over the amps since they mouting board will be covered.

This is the speaker wiring diagram as I was working on figuring out how I wanted to wire the speakers.

Here is was working on finalizing the layout with the actual components.

Decided to add some bling to the install.

Doing a rough install of the wiring to make sure I accounted for all the interconnects, power, etc.

I needed to mount the amp rack to the back wall of the port console in the storage compartment. I laminated to 3/4" thick pieces of marine grade plywood using thickened epoxy. After it cured I mounted them on a board to hold them in place while epoxying them to the back of the console. I did it this way to make it easier to get everything in place. Once epoxied in, I unscrewed the longer boards leaving the mounting blocks in place.

Back to the amp rack. Lots of holes to be drilled for the wiring and screws.

I used aluminum standoffs to mount a cover over all of it so the storage comparment was still useable.

I decided to bring all the wiring up under the amps so I made mounting platforms for the amps to raise them up.

Now onto the stereo faceplate.

Here is what the original mounting plate looked like for the stereo.

I knew I would be mounting a new head unit, an equalizer to balance the tower speakers because I added to more pods and some switches to control the amps individually as well as the fans. To keep an eye on the voltage I installed a digital voltage gauge and a digital temp gauge. To individually measure the temps of the amps, I routed the signal wire through a switch so I could select which amp I wanted to measure. I also installed a USB header and a 3.5mm stereo header so I could plug an ipod, thumb drive or other storage device in.

In this pic you can also see the ACR led since I put an ACR and wanted to know when the batteries were combined.

Funny, I threw out that exact same preamp/eq last weekend...It was in my truck and was the source of some engine noise...Sweet system tho...how does it sound?

It sounds great. I hope the EQ doesn't cause any problems. If it does, it will get swapped out.

I was not able to listen to it with the subwoofer as the new Alpine amp I bought was defective and fried the sub. I have a new sub and a new amp ready to install as soon as I bring the boat home. That and a new swim platform.

Re: Stereo Upgrade project with pics

Thanks guys. It was supposed to be a weekend project. Took a lot longer since I added a lot more fab work than I initially thought I was going to do.
