Ok, replacing the stern drive oil on this 1986 boat with a Merc470... took the vent plug out, took the drain plug out... drained! ready to pump the new oil into the drain hole... gaskets look worn!!! dang it, gonna have to go all the way over to the marina to get a proper gasket or can I get a gasket that matches at the local hardware store?

called marina - they say it's a fiber gasket and probably wouldn't recommend a part from a local hardware store.... imagine hardware store probably just rubber gasket and would think that would work? obviously don't wanna get water in there soooooooooo??? Marina 25 miles away, home depot 2...

???

Well, take the time to do it right now.... or take it apart and do it again later.

It is a specialty gasket that I would not even think of replacing with anything you can get from Home Depot. Sorry, but it is time to take a trip. ;) Go ahead and pick up several while you are there - even a few extra outdrive mounting gasket sets. That way you have extra on hand for those last minute inspections / repairs.

there is only one in the bottom portion so it will cost more in fuel than at store but better than h2o in the drive
