Sterndrive Cooling

I'm converting a small bowrider to electric drive. The motor, controller and batteries are air cooled. I'd like to remove the impeller from the 1992 OMC Cobra sterndrive.
Question: Does the sterndrive water pump cool the upper unit or just the engine?
Keep in mind this is not a high performance application.

That's a cool project. I don't know the answer to your question but I'd guess by your "not high performance" comment this thing isn't getting up on plane for extended periods. In that case, even if the water did cool the upper gears to some extent by passing close by that portion of the casting, I doubt it would matter if you're not putting much power thru them. why remove it id use it and just let it drop back into a return to keep unit cool
