Hi,
I'm brand new to this website and forum and I'm in need of some expert advice if anyone can give it!
Here are my outdrive/sterndrive specs:
~1987
Mercruiser
Alpha One, Gen One
Serial # OB763407
Engine:
Mercruiser
3.0L
130 HP
4 Cyl
Serial # OB699215
So I took my boat out for a spin a few weeks back, rough starting, but all went well after the bad gas burned off. Came home, parked boat, had trim up all the way. Two days later I notice a green oil leakage coming from what I've identified to be the upper shift shaft where it comes out into the open in the small well area between the upper and lower housing. Trimmed down, leak stopped, then leak came back, this time through the weephole on the bottom of lower unit.
From the small amount of research I've done across the internet, some people say seals, some say bushings, while others say a carrier seal issue. Most people say if there is gear oil in the top bellow, then I'm looking at a carrier seal replacement etc. Everyone agrees that gear should not be coming from there. But I'm not 100% certain and I have some questions...
If anyone has any advice for me on the following questions, please give! I'd much appreciate it.
1. Can or should I consider repairing this myself? (I used to work on aircraft in the AF but that's a different mechanical story alltogether.)
2. Are there special tools needed? (torque wrench etc.)
3. Should I be concerned with the upper or lower unit?
4. Is there a specific seal kit that might address my issues?
5. I managed to find manual #6, which I think is right and I can follow repair instructions, but just need some advice from some seasoned boating veterans!
Thanks!
