Sterndrive Interchangeable to Other Engines?

One more question please:<br />Are the stern drive assemblies (upper and lower units together)on OMC able to be switched between different size engines, say from a 5.0L to a 5.7L or 5.8L? Must an OMC drive assembly be mated to only an OMC engine or would it work on other brands?<br />Thanks for any info here.
