Since the drive is cooled by water and is usually cool, you'll actually get lower friction in the drive using synthetic oil in it. (Once the drive is up to operating temp the difference although significant is not as much)
After you stop the drive it cools fairly quickly (after all it's in "cold" water)....
It's probably a good idea to use either the Mercury, Volvo Penta or any good synthetic gear oil in the drive. Mercury and other marine synthetic oils will actually allow *some* albeit very little, mixing with water and not separate to continue adequate lubrication until you can get it changed. I don't know if the non-marine gear oils will do that....
Since this is something you may do once every year or every other year the cost of the oil is not very significant.
