Sterndrive wont shift into reverse

mercruiser 888 outdrive

it shifts into forward no problem, then shift into reverse and it wont lock in all the way. i split the outdrive to take a better look and the shift shaft springs back from reverse. i lock it in hold the prop and if i let off i can see the shift shaft turn back towards forward. i dont remember it or, have never seen it do that before any help would be great thanks

did you ever get your outdrive fixed?? Mine had a similar problem and the whole thing was a bushing where the shift arm runs through was wrecked.. would swivel in one direvtion but not the othe..or at least not all the way.. kept making that teeth chattering sound when I went into reverse...

a simple bushing...the rest was good

Ayuh,... No answer in 50 minutes, middle of the day,...Imagine that...

I'd guess your lower shift cable is worn out,+ needs replacing....
The manual explains it,+ has pictures of that Bushing...
You can find the 1 for your drive, Here,.. along with Alotta other Great Info...
