Stiff remote lever

The lever on motor i just bought, a mid 80's evinrude, has a pretty stiff remote shifter/lever, and the idle lever is tight too. Is there any way to adjust these? Do they need greased? I see where they connect to the motor, they seem to have tensioners, does that adjust it? Thanks!

Disconnect the control cables from the engine and see if the box losens up. If not, probably the control box is in need of a cleaning and relube or the control cables need replaced.<br /><br />If there is a friction adjustment on the box, losen it up and see if it makes a difference. It would be just below the ignition switch.
