I have a 16' bowrider with a 70 hp Force which I bought used.

The steering at speed (plane +) is fine turning to the right but very stiff turning back to the left.

Is this normal and assuming not, what is the likely cause and resolution?

Hi NW,
At WOT, does the boat pull to the right. Rather I should say, would you be able to let go of the steering wheel at WOT and the boat maintain a true course.
If the boat is pulling to the right or left for that matter then you need to make an adjustment to the trim tab.
The trim tab is the little fin located just above the prop. Loosen the bolt that secures it and turn the trailing edge to the same direction that the boat is pulling to

Good luck

Thks for reply, but, believe boat does not pull to right on own; just hard to turn to left (have to confirm this weekend). Any other ideas folks?

P.S. Wot is "WOT"?

Had the identical problem with my 235 Johnson, on a 24 ft CC Mako. After much searching & "grumpy" steering, one day when the motor was full up for trailering, I noticed that the skeg had apparently gotten whacked, such that it was no longer perfectly vertical & straight, but instead had a slight cruvature (sorta like a crescent moon) at the leading edge.

I carefully straightened it (unless you know something about metals, I'd suggest you have it done by a professional), and now its a charm to turn in either direction...

Good Luck...

WOT - Wide Open Throttle.

Disconnect your steering cable at engine. Turn the stering wheel left and right all the way. How does that feel?
Turn the unhooked engine left and right. How does that feel?

Is there some sharp bends somewhere between the transom and steering wheel?

Let us know...

Bear
