2001 Johnson 70HP 2-Cycle - J70 PLSIS

Now it will start and run for a few seconds, then stall. New spark plugs and fuel primer solenoid.

This after removing all three carbs; replacing the primer bulb, hose, and fuel filter; putting non-ethanol fuel in the tank; and finally replacing the VRO2 pump yesterday.

Kinda at a loss here. What would possibly cause this? Carbs looked just fine when pulled, cleaned, and inspected. All jets flowed compressed air.

Any suggestions greatly appreciated...Thanks

The carburetors have adjustable low speed jets and how many turns out are they ?------------Now starting these motors requires some understanding and a proper procedure too.----------Outline exactly how you try and start this motor .-----There are about 6 or 7 steps to take.---Certainly not like starting a modern car where all you do is turn the key / push the button.

Thanks Racer The answer is "I Don't Know" on the carbs adustment. It ran last fall and no adjustment since. I was a little surprised at how clean and free of any thing they were when I disassembled and cleaned them. Owner had simply parked the boat last September and walked away, no Sta-Bil or anything else so it had been 8 months.

Leg all the way down in the water, pump both primer bulbs until hard, throttle at idle position, simultaneously push key in and turn to start. It will then fire and run for count of five-six maybe, and stall out.

Are you not raising the fast idle lever at all ?------When motor stalls / falters you push key in momentarily untill it warms a bit.

Temperature in the 90's here. Dew point 60-65. But I'll try the fuel primer next time...

Bottom line here is I pulled carbs a second time and re-cleaned them. Paid special attention to the five very small holes in the top of the carb body this time. They seemed to be partially plugged and cleaning with more solvent, a pin, and compressed air resulted in the engine running well again. So it was dirty carbs all along. Low speed jets adjusting screws out roughly 2 - 2 1/2 turns.

Now to address changing impeller and gear case lube!
