Hi there, I have a 1971 18hp Evenrude Model number 18102s and it stopped pumping water so i put in a new water pump and impeller but it still doesn't pump water, I noticed the little key on the shaft which slots into the impeller is a bit worn, could this be th problem?

Did you put the entire water pump kit on? Did it stop working before you put the new kit on or after. Was the old impeller broken? Maybe pieces went up the water tube. Sure you got the lil pin back in to turn the impeller? Sure you got the water tube put into the pump? You could try hooking a hose up to the tube (make an adapter) and removing the thermostat cover and see if water comes out.

Re: still doesn't pump water

Samo_ott, has brought up some good points, read his post well.

Couple of things to consider.

- If you are testing this in a barrel then make very sure the water is almost to (4 to 6 inches below) the exhaust relief hole where some of the water and exhaust come out.

- If you think the old key to impeller is worn, then replace it.

- There is a good chance that when you where sliding the lower unit back on the water tube did not go in the water tube grommet (part number #10 in the diagram).

- Was the old impeller broken? If it was then some of the bits could have gotten lodged in the water tube or in the water jackets around the cylinders.

- Remover your thermostat cover and check your thermostat and make sure it is functional and not covered with lime like stuff that will keep it from opening. After taking the thermostat out some members have used a garden hose with a thin spout on the end and inserted the spout in or close enough to flushed out the jackets and also the water tube. (Just a couple of suggestions) ** If you damage the thermostat cover gasket then replace it and retorque the bolts.

- Check the lower unit where the water enters that is not caked up with mud or sludge or plastic that is causing the water pump not to get water.

Others may have some other suggestions or advice.

Here is an electronic parts diagram for your motor.

How do you find and get to the thermostat

Item #19 in the diagram.(follow the link)

http://www.boats.net/parts/search/BRP/EVINRUDE/1971/18102S 1971/CYLINDER & CRANKCASE/parts.html

It sits in the top of the cylinder head cover.

Check out the parts diagram link that I originally supplied. If your are going to service your motor and do so on an on going basis it would probably wise to get a manual for it. They are sold through Ken Cook Co. on iboats or they have specific year model service manual on ebay all the time....they even have some on cd which are even cheaper on ebay. Spend the money and get the manual.....worth every dollar!!!

Good luck!!

The thermostat is on top of the head. 3 screws on a triangular plate. Real easy to remove.

Did you check to make sure the telltale tube wasn't clogged? My motor stopped pumping last year. Turned out that a mud dauber clogged it up.
