1998 70 hp johnson

well i think i tried everything. i will start with the compression test 2 cylinders are 110 and one is 115 know this test was done right after the motor was run, it was warm know can i still get good readings with the cylinders screwed up some how. the major problem is that the plugs are wet with oil after ideling on the hose for 5 to 10 min. i have totally disconnected the on board fuel supply so i am running premix from a separate tank. i have also rebuilt all three carbs and adjusted according to the manual. it also seems to idle ruff, it shakes around quite a bit and does not run smooth like my v6 mariner.

if anyone has thoughts please respond i will entertain any idea.

Thanks for all the help guys.

Hmm, just guessing here, but could you have a weak spark condition, resulting in not burning off all the fuel/oil mix? You might want to do a spark test.

J

I'm not expert enough in repair yet to try and educate someone else on likely causes of weak spark, but there are numerous posts you can find with a quick search, or one of the masters might be able to add on their thoughts.

A dark test I think is more for looking for sparking to ground outside the normal path, though that's probably worth doing, I was thinking more in terms of a nice hot spark jumping across a good gap.

Here's a post with some info on spark checking:
http://www.iboats.com/cgi-bin/ubb/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=28;t=034989#000001

Don't hold it near your plug hole though, it will be spitting fuel/oil and you don't want to torch that off on accident...

J
