I posted about a month or so ago with some reverse problems just to get everyone upto speed, i have a 1989 Evinrude 150, had everything in the lower unit replace because the previous owner hit something in the water and bent the prop shaft tore up the gears all that fun stuff, we took it out ran great, but when i went to put into reverse it felt like it was binding up and when it did unbind all i got was throttle no reverse , took it back to the guy who worked on it said it was the cables, i replaced the cables took it out again, same thing, took it BACK to the guy again he said it was a cable adjustment, he adjusted it and it still did it, finely the guy said it was the box he was for sure it was the box, i bought a new BRP control box, and it still does it and its very annoying. i have 2 places tell me its the box, This guy that did all the work, said everything is where it should be shift rod is fine and is adjusted to spec and all the linkage is ok, im at my wits end with this thing, i appreciate any help you guys could give me

Re: Still having reverse problems

I would take it back to the guy that did it in the first place and tell him to call you when it is right.

He obviously didn't do something right, and shifting is something it should normally do so his job isn't finished until it operates as it should.

Something is not allowing the shifter to move the cluchdog far enough to engage reverse you have new cables and a control box so that leaves something in the lower that isn't right.

Re: Still having reverse problems

Just went outside to try again, i pulled the Shift Cable off spun the prop, went to put it into reverse and i couldnt get it to go, all it did was slow the prop down like it was rubbing or something, spun the prop again and it goes into forward, but once i messed with it one more time it went into reverse. So its hit or miss with this thing

It may be the shift rod length was not set correctly when the shop rebuilt the LU.

OK, so lets get the facts right, the gear system was OK before the rebuild? if yes, then he has done "something" that is his problem to fix, unless the shift shaft has been refitted completely wrong, I don't think it is the problem, slight differences can be adjusted out with the cable adjustments, so you have a new control box and new cables? this is also correct? if yes, then ot proves the Tech has done something really odd and may require a strip down to check/fix.

Re: Still having reverse problems

what I was asking was, that the gear **** was working before the gearbox was touched (and before it blew up) regardless of what has been replaced, we need to know if it was OK before.

Re: Still having reverse problems

I bought it from a guy who bought it from an estate sale, that guy never used the boat, i bought the boat becouse it was a great price took it home, i spun the prop myself there was a horrible clicking noise coming from the bottom end, i called a friend who recommended me to this boat shop and i took it down there and that is where i found out that the lower unit was shot, so thats all i really know whats going on

Re: Still having reverse problems

try moving the shift rod under the power head i think down for rev & see fi it holds in gear with a load if so it,s a easy ajustment on the lower not enough or to little travel of the shift rod pain in the *** but easy

You should check the shift shaft bushing, and belcrank under the carbs, on the powerhead.
