Still Having Tilt/Trim Issues

I thought my problem was in the tilt/trim switch so I bought a new one, wired it in and the problem is the same. I have it narrowed down to the pump relays (I think).

The pump I have is a SAE J1171 Marine. It will bring the lower unit up just fine but it does not want to push it back down. When I push the down button I just hear a click. The pump has three wires on it (blue, black, and green). I am guessing that the blue is positive when it raises and the green is positive when it lowers the outdrive. Is this correct or do I have it backwards???? Would it be ok to apply 12 volts to the appropriate wire when on the lake or will I damage something hooking the pump directly to the battery???

Additionally, does anyone have a diagram with part #'s to show me what parts to order and replace??

Not exactly sure of what your working on here but think it's a merc.Yes blue is up and green is down.It won't hurt anything to jump a hot wire directly to the green.Do you have 2 solenoids on that pump.If so the one the green wire goes to is the down solenoid. That is what you are hearing click when you hit the down switch. It is bad unless you have a loose wire on it.You can jump a screwdriver between the heavy red wire and the heavy green wire on that solenoid to test it.If it runs the solenoid is bad or one of those wires is loose.http://bpi.ebasicpower.com/c/MER3B/

That number is just a marine classification number and not a part number.

I ran a jump wire from the red to the green wire and it worked just fine. So I think you are correct about the solenoid being bad.

Yes, it is a mercury alpha outdrive, mercruiser 240 hp motor.

That's one of the most common problems and frequently asked questions on this forum. Sounds like you got a understanding and handle on what's going on. Good Luck.
