Hello I posted this last May "I have a 1985 85hp Evinrude Model# 85899c Serial# J0003226. I was attempting to start the motor for the first time this summer. The motor started and ran for 2-3 seconds then died. I can get it to run for that amount of time with spraying some starting fluid into the carbs. I have removed as many fuel lins as i can reach and made sure they are clear. At first it seemed like the fuel was just not reaching the carbs. The fuel filter is letting fuel past so i thought it might be a restriction after the filter. all that is behind it is a splitter that sends fuel to each of the carbs. I can spray starter fluid into that splitter and it will start then die even with coaxing with the fluid. I had the carbs overhouled a couple years ago. Could there be something else that would cause this similar problem or does it sound like the carbs are just gumed up?"

The replies suggested a good carb cleaning.
Unfortuatly i was straped for cash until now and just had the carbs cleaned. After the cleaning the boat started and ran fine. Until it hit the water. It started up then when the warm-up lever was put down it had an extremly low idle. My dad and his friend tried upping the idle a bit with no success. I came over to my parents to take a look at it and it was now doing the same thing as it was before the cleaning. =[ I took the plugs out and they were wet. I installed new plugs and no change.
Thank you for your time

Re: still no workie

Hi,
When you had the carbs cleaned, were they done at a dealer and new carb kits put in? Is it running on all four cylinders? How is the compression? Is the fuel fresh or has it been sitting for a couple of years? You can check to see if each cylinder is firing by removing the spark plug lead and hear if you can hear a change in rpm. Be careful and use insulated pliers so as not to get a shock. If you have a bad power pack it can take out a bank and still run on two cylinders. The compression should not vary by more than 15 psi between the lowest and highest readings. Let me know how it goes.
