I have the Mercury Service Manual for the 50/60 ELPT FourStoke Big Foot starting year 2001. I have a 2001 Model 60. Other than the HP difference, I can't find in the specs any other difference between the 50 and the 60. They have the same weight, rpm ratings, bore, stroke, powerhead, timing, valve gear, gear ration, etc. How does Merc. get 50 HP and 60 HP from the same engine?

Usually the carb and porting.

I never thought about that until now and I do this for a living. But carbs and porting are close. Gear reduction in the foot would be my first guess. I'll ask our rep. And also I'll check the foot parts list for differences for you.

Re: Still Requesting Mercury Tech. Comment

hello
sometimes its as simple as just not opening the top carb or a restrictor in the exhaust plate
some alska waters have a 35 hp limit so they make restrictors to make 40 and 50 hp into 35's. on the old nissan/tohatsu it was the arm on the top carb that just did not open the throttle.
so the only way to really tell is to compare each and every part to the parts manual.
good luck and keep posting

Clanton wrote something and then decided to eliminate (edit) it.

Mercury will not divulge the differences in hp ratings on the same displacement block. Neither will any other manufacturer.

Carb size, reed stiffness, port timing, compression ratio, exhaust tuning, ignition timing and maximum advance and finally peak rpm all make a hp difference.

A manufacturer may use any of the above alone or in combination to get the rating they seek.

Seeking to get cheap hp by parts swapping is a fool's errand.

The reply I had was for a 2 stroke engine. You ask for 4 stroke information. The reeds are different on the 2 stroke 50hp and 60hp. If this engine is injected, then only a small change in the ecu might account for the different.

C'mon thats like asking Burger King, What's in their special sauce? I doubt you'll ever get Mercury to give comment on this topic.Remember Mercury spent millions of dollars in research to make their engines do what they do, and they won't give up that info!
