My 90 HP Force was acting the same way. Checked all connections from batt to starter. Removed the starter, disassembled it and greased the bushings. Problem fixed.

Have you done(can't remember) a compression /spark test?Use a good tester.
Take the starter apart and clean the brushes and where the brushes set.
Have the battery tested, new can be bad.Make sure the connections are clean and tight.J

Do you mean that it's cranking slowly despite the new battery? Like Jerry said, check all the battery connections: two at the battery, two at the solenoid, one at the starter, and make sure the ground bolts right to the block; I bolted it in under the starter solenoid once, and it wouldn't crank well because all the grounding was going through that 18 guage wire that grounds the solenoid. Try shorting between the two big terminals of the solenoid with something metal; if it cranks faster, the solenoid is bad. If it doesn't, rebuild the starter.

By bushings I mean the bearings the shaft runs in in each end of the starter. I think you misunderstood me to mean the brushes.

Weak starter maybe. Also check TDC with timing mark to make sure flywheel key didn't sheer on you.

Have you tried pushing it and popping the clutch in 1st gear! That works on my 1970 35 HP Chrysler when needed. All jokes aside but is a 55 HP too hard to pull start? My 35HP will usually start on the 1st or 2nd pull if we run the battery down with crappy lights fishing at night. I had to get that joke in sooner or later.

Good Luck!
