Stinger or Not?

Well I am trying to find out if my engine is a Stinger model or just a normal 75 Johnson. I do know that it is a 1977 Johnson 75. The model number is
75ERL77S. I am trying to find the right prop for this motor and the one on it is a 13.25x17 and I am wanting to go with a smaller diameter and smaller pitch. I know that when I look up props they ask if it is a large or small gearcase and I am not sure but I think the difference is between the Stinger and standard 75.

Re: Stinger or Not?

It is not a small gearcase model. The ONLY small gearcase 75s were short shafts. Yours is a long (20-inch). Not all Stingers were short shafts, but all short shafts were Stingers (for that year).

Have you tached out the motor? Why are you going smaller dia/pitch? Ideally, you want your motor to be peaking in the 5500-5800 RPM range with a light load.

Re: Stinger or Not?

No tach on the boat but I put a 13 pitch and I am going to try it this afternoon and I will find out if this is the problem and let you know. Thanks for the info on the motor. I know that the block is white but the outside has been painted black. Under the new labels and paint I can make out the outline from the Stinger decal so I assume this is what I have. What are the differences between the Stinger and the normal 75 outboard?

Decals - at least with the longshaft version. Short shaft Stinger had the small gearcase... I don't think there was a non-Stinger short shaft.
