By "stinger" I assume your mean stringer, and forget it, unless your real good with filling that giant hole in your transom with fiberglass. They are 2 completey different horses. The string uses the whole motor and drive to trim your ride. The Cobra uses only the drive utilizing ujoints. The Cobra also bolts to the transom of the boat, the Dtringer bolts to the motor and the "play" needed to trim is absorbed by that giant black boot surrounding your drive.

Whats wrong with and what model is your stringer, 400 or 800?

Nope. The transoms are totally different.

What's wrong with the existing set-up?

Well its a 800 "stringer" of course i thought it was a stinger. Anyway it does not engage when i put it into gear. the engine runs great. NO over heating or anything. I was on the lake and it felt like the prop fell off. Well a buddy of mine has a newer cobra and i was going to buy it for next to nothing and thats why i asked if they would bolt right up. Becuse i thought that would be cheaper than takeing it to a boat doctor. And of course i dont have a manual or a clue to figure out whats wrong with mine.

When my 800 stringer suddenly seemed to drop out of gear while heading out to go fishing it was because the prop shaft had snapped in half. About $450 later I was back in business.
Good luck

I really dont think its a shaft becuse i can put the tranny into gear and the shaft catches and it feels like teeth are catching and i can also take it out of gear and it spins freely. But like i said i dont have a clue and dont know what a spun shaft feels like and would be really happy if it was just a shaft. Could it be somthing worse like spider gears?

Also i was woundering on the 800 omc i took the four screws out of the top plate and when i went to put it back together the top plate doesent seem to want to go back down all the way in order to butt the lower end back up to it. It will not go any futher than the o ring where it would sit level do i need to just smack it down with something or is there a trick to butt it back together? Any help on this would be great becuse ive been messing with the dang thing for hours.

Sorry about my reply dude, I just re-read it, wow, I need a new keyboard. The kids have spilled more S@#$ in it and now the damn keys stick like crazy. Sorry, I wasn't trying to be an A@#.

BTW, if your really not familiar with how that thing works, either get a manual or a mechanic. As I have learned, you can't just start taking things apart. If your talking about the four screws way inside under the prop, you need a puller to remove the housing in front, then realignment tools for reassembly. If it's the four that hole the upper to the lower, theres another hidden under the cavitatin plate. I suggest a manual, patience and read before doing, or get a mechanic. Unfortunately for those of us with stringers, not too many around willing to work on them. Best of luck.-Jeff
