I have a Stingray on the foot of my engine , but when I'm trimmed all the way up , my steering pulls hard to the right . I haven't been able to get it out with the trim tab on my foot . My Stingray doesn't have the adjustable tabs on it to correct this . Would I be able to get it out with a new Stingray that does have the adjustable tabs ?

Re: Stingray / Hydrafoil

Year, Make, Model of Boat, and Engine would be helpful. :)

Also, I have never had any luck with hydrofoils. They drag considerably, and I ended up trashing the one that came with my engine. Also, over torquing was an issue also. I had the Stringray XP on my '94 Vindicator 200, and all it did was hold down the front of my boat which caused performance lag.

adjust the back of the trim tab above the prop, toward the right. i hate those things. give them to someone you hate and buy a set of smart tabs. they put unnessary stress on the motor and transom. if the boat is the slightest bit out of level one side of the foil drags.

What are smart tabs ? The boat is an 18 foot Procraft fish and ski with a 175 Evinrude .

Wow ! That's a new one on me Tashasdaddy . I've been around the water pretty much all my life and never heard of them . What you said about the boat being the least bit unlevel making the Stingray dig on one side is exactly what it seems to be doing . I adjusted the tab on the foot and it helped a lot until I trimmed up to a certain point and then It had no effect . Will the smart tabs do away with the hard right pull ? And how do they affect your top end speed ?

Re: Stingray / Hydrafoil

I see a set on e bay for $149 . I'm gonna go check around on what's out there . I took the Stingray off the last time I ran the boat and the boat took a lot longer to come up on plane , which I was expecting . I think I had my jack plate adjusted up too high though . I just installed the jackplate and hadn't done any tuning on it . My brother ran beside me in his boat and said it looked like the engine was sitting way high . I had my son in law on the boat with me and he out weighs me by about 20 lbs. , I guess that making the boat a little bit unlevel made the hydrafoil drag . Thanks again , sounds like a good idea . Now that I see how they mount , I do remember seeing them on boats before . I guess I just never new anyone personally that had them .

Fins don't work on every boat but they do on most small obs. Unfortunately the reason why fins give squirrly results is not often spoken. Wear and tear history on the motor from fins can't be backed by actual cases either. If the stingray is mounted correctly it won't drag when in a high speed turn...or in a straight line. Most fins are used for getting on a plane faster. If used for that reason the engine should mounted so they clear the water at high speed. If used with a hydraulic jackplate the stingray will let you trim higher without venting the prop (a low water pickup and water pressure gauge will let you trim with a hydraulic jp up to the center of the hub at water level without a fin though). I use a fin only for higher top speed but not with a jackplate. The motor trim tab is what makes your boat drive straight, not tabs or fins.
