I know there have been many posts regarding hydrofoils and trim tabs and the pros and cons of each but would like to add my 2 cents worth. I think I have read just about all of the posts regarding this subject and appreciate the knowledge and expertise of everyone's input. Being a relative novice when it comes to boats, I have learned a great deal from this site. I have a 16 foot aluminum with a 40 HP on the back. I was unsure to go with a hydrofoil or trim tabs to solve my porpoising problem. I decided that a hydrofoil was the way to go not only from the information I gleened from this site, but for budget restraints as well as the fact that I have a relatively small boat and trim tabs would be overkill in my opinion. I started looking and decided on either the doel fins of stingray jr. I found the doel fins for $42.00CDN at a nearby boat supply place. I hadn't seen the Stingrays in the flesh so I wanted to wait before I decided. I stopped at the next nearest marina and found Stingray Jr's for the unbelievable prive of $9.95CDN, that's like a buck fifty American! These are actual Stingrays and not cheap copies. The guy from the marina told me that he bought "old stock" which are white in colour (who makes white outboards anymore). I spray painted the stingray with a can of black plasticote from the local crappy tire and am planning on testing the setup this weekend. Hopefully my $15CDN investment will improve my performance and handling. I will let everyone know. By the way, some of the posts I read were against the hydrofoils because of the stess it put on the anticavitation plate of the motor, while I was in the marina, I noticed all the motors (up to 90HP at least) were on stands which supported the motor by the anticavitation plate. Just an observation.
