I know there have been many posts regarding hydrofoils and trim tabs and the pros and cons of each but would like to add my 2 cents worth. I think I have read just about all of the posts regarding this subject and appreciate the knowledge and expertise of everyone's input. Being a relative novice when it comes to boats, I have learned a great deal from this site. I have a 16 foot aluminum with a 40 HP on the back. I was unsure to go with a hydrofoil or trim tabs to solve my porpoising problem. I decided that a hydrofoil was the way to go not only from the information I gleened from this site, but for budget restraints as well as the fact that I have a relatively small boat and trim tabs would be overkill in my opinion. I started looking and decided on either the doel fins of stingray jr. I found the doel fins for $42.00CDN at a nearby boat supply place. I hadn't seen the Stingrays in the flesh so I wanted to wait before I decided. I stopped at the next nearest marina and found Stingray Jr's for the unbelievable prive of $9.95CDN, that's like a buck fifty American! These are actual Stingrays and not cheap copies. The guy from the marina told me that he bought "old stock" which are white in colour (who makes white outboards anymore). I spray painted the stingray with a can of black plasticote from the local crappy tire and am planning on testing the setup this weekend. Hopefully my $15CDN investment will improve my performance and handling. I will let everyone know. By the way, some of the posts I read were against the hydrofoils because of the stess it put on the anticavitation plate of the motor, while I was in the marina, I noticed all the motors (up to 90HP at least) were on stands which supported the motor by the anticavitation plate. Just an observation.

Mischief, Welcome to the boards.

Looking forward to hearing how the foil works out.

I personally would be very surprised if the porposing issue will be solved by the foil though, but for your sake, I hope Im wrong.

Re: stingray hydrofoil

It is not the constant load (weight of the motor) that cracks the cavitation plate, it's the continuos intermitant shock loads that stress the plate.

John is right, plus the fact that the load is directed at four specific points(bolt holes) on the plate. Though for your size rig and motor, I doubt you will have any problems with overstressing the plate. Let us know how it works out.

Sounds to me that the cheapest alternative would be to move the gas tank forward. ON the other hand, the hydrofoil will correct the porposing as well as add other benefits.

Re: stingray hydrofoil

Hello all!
Just back from a beautiful day at Mississauga lake! I tried the setup with the hydrofoil today and here is what I found.
1) boat came up on plane faster and didn't tip up when I came off the throttle real fast.
2) boat still porpoised when I trimmed the motor up at WOT.
3) lost about 5mph off the top end.
Boat did track alot better on the way back with the front live well full of water(and a couple of bass).
I also found that my cavitation plate is a couple of inches below the surface of the water when the boat is up on plane and WOT. I am going to raise the motor up a notch or two and try again next weekend. All in all not a bad day, lots of sun, fresh air, a few fish, and the experiment only cost me about $15. By the way, I forgot to mention that the place I got the Stingray Jr. for $9.99 was Sandy Cove Marina just south of Barrie in case anyone is interested. Thanks all for the input. Have a great Day!

Re: stingray hydrofoil

Raise the motor, unless the cavitation plate is at the same level as the bottom of the boat (V). If the plate is at the same level then your boat is running stern heavy even when on plane. The loss of 5 MPH means your also using more fuel.

Like John said, since the motor is too low and you added more surface area (drag) you lost efficiency.

The whole idea behing a fin is to allow you to raise the motor and increase efficiency. I would expect a loss of speed and economy by only adding the fin. Nothing unusual.

I added a set of Doel fins to my 50 hp evinrude on 16' thermoglass boat, and found that bow lift was diminshed. There was also better stability, steering
and top end was same or better.

The fins (black) were $24.00 canadian

put a foil on 18ft aluminum w/ 60 merc 4 stroke. it fixed my porpoise problem. Moving gas tank up wasn't an option.

A war? Not really. Monty Racing has the national championship trophy to prove it. Well, OK. He painted his Jrude red.
