Hopefully there is an easy answer for this.

Could someone tell me the factory spark plug for a 1996 Evinrude 50 SPL?

Thanks in advance!

E50ESLEUS - 1997 Sunbird Spirit 150
I have been using M/N E50ESLEUR as I cant find “S” in the catalog. I think S just denotes “Sunbird”

I ask because I was told it is supposed to have suppressor type plugs in it and does not like resistor type. It has NGKs in it now which i am pretty sure is a resistor plug. I am not familiar with suppressor type.

I did not find that engine model number, however, an E50ELDE takes a Champion QL78YC, which is a Q resistor spark plug, and is pretty standard for that year and make.

The way I understand it, using something other than a Q suppressor plug can impact the function of the ign system.

Is there a difference between a resistor plug and a suppressor plug?

I unfortunately used the two terms interchangeably, which is likely a mistake. I do not know the precise difference, but I believe the Q suppressor is the right spark plug, for the OIS (optical Ignition System, that I assume you have.

Resistor plugs were first used to help stop radio interference, so we could listen to Do Wop songs in our 60's Chevys. Most outboard motors do not use them, nor do they use resistor spark plug wires, which also help with RF interference.

Thank you, yes I am familiar with resistor plugs and wires. Never heard of “Q suppressor” unless that’s just a term coined by Champion. My 2nd hand Evinrude had NGKs in it which I’m pretty sure is a resistor type.

??---A 1996 model 50 does not have optical ignition !
I am not sure what ignition it has. It is a coil type with a coil that feeds both cylinders. Information is hard to find. Which is why i’ve turned to forums. If you know what it has, please share!

It is NOT optical ignition.-----Just the standard electronic magneto ignition that was developed / first used in 1971 models !!!----One coil with 2 sets of windings, one for each cylinder.----Run with L77JC4

Thank you. The parts site i have been using suggests Champion QL78YC, under model number E50ESLEUR. Any harm in using this one? I have already purchased. FWIW I did also purchase a Seloc manual but it is not exactly model specific.

"suppressor" means it reduces or eliminates RFI which interferes with nearby electronic equipment. Champion "R" plugs have resistive suppressors, "Q" plugs have inductive suppressors. The suppressor type affects the spark waveform. I doubt it will cause any physical other than performance.
