Hi,
I just picked up a 1998 Evinrude 25HP electric start, remote control. I'm looking for an ID tag, but it appears to have been removed. I also looked for some kind of serial number on the powerhead. I couldn't find one, but I don't really know what to look for there or where to look. Any other places to look for serial numbers? I can figure out a model number (or come pretty close) by looking at parts diagrams, but I think I will need a serial number or other kind of specific identifier to get a title.
Thanks,
Lewis

Post a picture if paint work is original.

Here's a shot of where I looked for a serial number on the powerhead, then a closer-in shot. If that is supposed to be an aluminum welch type plug with a serial number, it looks like it has been painted over -- maybe even filed smooth and then painted over.

That looks like it. Have you checked the stern brackets for a number ??

Racerone,
Here's a pic of the cowling, although I'm not sure I understand how that will help with a serial number.

Boobie,
There is a sticker with some generic OMC info (engine family, gap, etc.) on one clamp; that sticker shows in the picture immediately above in my post #6. Nothing else on the clamps or midsection.

Look closer and see if there's a model #.

Boobie, the picture included shows the two stickers from a different motor (not the one I'm concerned about). My motor has just the lower sticker with emissions info, etc. Nothing at all like the upper sticker with model number and serial number.
Dino, I think you're right. I was hoping somebody had a rational explanation...

Not saying that motor was stolen, but I am seeing lots of OB engine on these forums without an identification plates on them. And those plates are usually installed with hammered on screw type fasteners... So it takes a pretty good force to remove them. It is not like they simply fall off or get scratched off either.

Good idea, J J! I'll give that a try, although I'm a little scared to put paint stripper in there.

^^^ lol, yeah, mine too!

I agree, put some stripper on the plug, or scrape it off. Might still be there?

Cleaned the paint off that welch plug with some acetone, and the markings have definitely been ground off.
I'm pretty sure the guy I bought it from didn't steal it. The motor still has a sticker from the boat dealer in a Wisconsin town that sold it or serviced it. I bought it from a guy in that same town who sold it openly on eBay and who certainly isn't trying to hide.
When I bought a used untitled trailer from out-of-state before, the Missouri highway patrol did some sort of an investigation and ultimately titled it with just a bill of sale. I guess I'll find out what the troopers think of this motor!

I would return that motor to the seller, myself.
