Stop button won't work - Evinrude 9.5

My 1964 Evinrude 9.5 started right up after sitting for about 10 years (I guess I put it away right!). For some reason the stop button doesn't kill the ignition anymore. The switch checks out fine with a VOM but checking across the leads from the switch to the points shows no resistance. So, if these are already tied together at the points, closing them with the switch doesn't change things. So why does it run if both sets of points are already grounded together? I pulled the flywheel and the points seem to be grounded through the primary side of the coils. This thing starts with a 6 inch pull, so it's got a hot spark. Where do I look next? Thanks in advance to those old magneto guys.

Bill.... The stop (kill) switch button has two wires that simply connect to the points, one wire to each set of points. Pressing the button in essence connects the two points together, effectively shorting out the ignition. If you have the two kill switch wires disconnected from the points, and the ohm meter connected to those wires, and the meter shows that you have a connect/disconnect function of the switch, it should work fine.

However, if you don't have those two wires disconnected from the points when you're checking it with a ohm meter, it's possible you're getting a false reading somehow. It stands to reason that when you connect the two points together via the stop/kill switch/button, it will be impossible for the engine to run.

being the owner of one of these engines heres a handy hint in the mean time , u can simply wind your throttle all the way down using the throttle adjuster in the right hand sie of the engine to kill it

Thanks guys. Yeah, I can live without the kill switch if I have to (it stops when throttle's turned all the way down) but now I'm just plain curious as to why it doesn't work like it used to. I guess if something craps out after being run for a while I'll find my answer. No sense tearing things apart if I don't have to.
