Re: stop trailer rust idea

If I filled my trailer with foam there would be no need to launch from the trailer. I could just duct tape it to the hull and save a ton of time! The Red Green show will prove this

Hmmmmmmm I wonder if it was Helium filled ........ would it lessen the tow weight??? :D I think I would stick with grease or a fluid film.

I do use a spray fluid film which leaves a wax like coating on everything .....similar to the old rustproofing methods of 25 years ago.

a sealed 1' section of 2 x 5" steel tube (as commonly used on trailers) will displace .52 gallons the displaced water weight is just over 4#. the steel itself weighs in at 6#. since the weight of the displaced water does not offset the tube weight, the sealed 1' section of 2 x 5" steel tube will sink. does not matter if you add foam to it, helium, or fill it with 5 psi or 3000 psi of air. Now if you let the tube expand by 50%, so that the weight of the tube is still 6#, however it now displaces .8 gallons of water - it will float.

same reason dive tanks sink, however if you take the air within the dive tank and let it fill a balloon, you can raise a ship with it.

Take the same tube, now add the 0.07 cubic feet of foam at 2#/cubic feet. and you add 0.14# to the tube and you do not increase its floatation because you still have not increased its ability to displace water.

I know that the weight of my trailer still overcomes its displacement no mater what its filled with (water, air, rust, foam, oil, frogs, baby rats). Trailer still sinks

I think it would just be easier to make peace with the idea that the trailer will not last as long as the boat does and sooner or later it will need to be replaced. I hate knowing that some day I will have to spend $5K to replace my trailer but its part of the cost of ownership.

Agreed. However down here new Tandem Axle Aluminum trailers factory fresh are only $2600. Add $200 for second axle brakes.

Depends on the trailer. I need one that will carry a 25foot boat that is 7K dry. The trailer I have now is rated at 9600Lbs. If its just a trailer for a bow rider or other non heavy boat then it will cost less. Also lesson learned on buying the cheapest trailer. Won't do that again...

Re: stop trailer rust idea

the easiest solution is to get a different trailer....glavanized or aluminum.
