storage wrinkle?

As I prepare to lay my boat up for the year and shrink wrap it, I was recently told that if I dont cover the prop hub with a plastic bag, water could accumulate in the hub and fill up the lower unit with water and crack it? I put the drive down as much as I can, but the marina has to move it on their grounds for storage. How do you guys who store your boats outdoors under cover address this? I'm thinking about putting duck tape around the hub opening of the prop to seal it. A plastic bag would eventually tear. thanks

just take the drive off and take it home.... it can't freeze in the garage.... less likely to get stolen too

Most dealers shrink wrap over the outdrive as well. The really smart ones put the boat in the winter position before they wrap it, so the outdrive can be put 100% down.

A friend of mine had his wrapped at a dealer on his trailer with the od up, then trailed it to his backyard for winter. The wrap over the prop split over winter. Come Spring, he was greeted with a puddle of oil under it. Lower unit was toast.

In your area of the country, I would suggest that it be sealed. We really don't bother down south.
