Stored boat without outdrive?

I damaged my out drive at the end of last summer and after plenty of assurances from a mechanic I was told not to worry about water getting up in the gimbal bearing, he said quote "we leave boats outside all the time without their outdrive on. So anyway today I looked up in there on on the very outside edge of the bearing assembly a tiny bit of grease wore off and there are two 1/4inch by 1/4 square areas of light rust. Is this a problem?

Nope.... It's the Inner surfaces of a bearing that are Critical....

I also store my boat driveless,... 'bout every year...

A 2 liter soda bottle works wonders

Most people store their boats with the drives off. It prevents their theft over the winter. I cover the opening with one of those inexpensive plastic covers made for it. It's under ten dollars and keeps little critters from getting in. As to the surface rust, just clean it off and put a light coat of grease on the surface before you put the drive on. You should be OK. As was suggested, check the sticky on summerizing. Good luck. Hy

seems like a little surface rust might be tolerable. if you have questions about the brg. stick your fingers in there and give it a spin.. it should be smooth as ice. if it was winterized proper it'd have been greased prior to lay up too. that'd keep the inside of the brg. nice and lubed up. the critical part.

bd... well, that's a mighty simple idea. i like it.

lbw. i'd venture to say most folks around my area don't store w/o drive. most of them are stored drive up too... myself... i've removed mine 2 years in a row. plan on 3 and more... seems like the way to go to me...

while the bottle ideas the best. the cover lbw talks about is a good idea too. dons accused me of too much time on my hands...

he was right, time and some spare plexi on hand and some glue. funny in the end though. the bellhousing was remove prior to lay up for me so it got stored with plastic bags rubber banded over the openings... worked ok for what it was..
