16 years ago I put my wood lapstrake with 1963 Johnson 75 horse in cold storage. I knew this was going to be a "long term" storage. So here's what I did. Lower unit was drained and refilled with new gear lube. The engine was run out of gas, and heavuily fogged with oil. I'm looking for any comments of what to be aware of and watch for as we start to bring her back to life this spring? Also, where is a good source for parts for the 1963 Johnsons?

welcome aboard,
if I were you, I would first squirt some lube like
WD40 into the cylinders and hand crank a little.
16 yrs is a long time... redrain lower unit, change
impeller, new plugs, fresh new portable tank with
new gas/oil, and 3 hail mary's :D
good luck, love those older laps
M.Y.

hey pfunk
these guys are correct I might even do a second set of hail marys though wd-40 is good but if you are near a volvo dealer volvo has a lube called corrosion shield it is not like the merc corrosion guard it is a lubricating oil I have never seen any thing work like this stuff works on any thing siezed.(works great on frozen steering cables). you will more than likely have to do the carbs. the fuel lines may need replacing and run a heavy mix of a good 2 stroke oil (25:1). Good Luck

Re: Stored for a long time

I think I might skip the WD-40 (I'm not a big WD-40 fan anyway)in the cylinders. If you fogged it when you stored it, the cylinders should(?) be lubed. I'm afraid the WD-40 might tend to wash the lube off the cylinder walls. I don't know about the Volvo Corrosion Guard. I would change the water pump before starting though because if they come apart, those little pieces of rubber will stop up the water passages and are tuff to clean out.

g'luck & c/6

Hooty
